Seismic methods
 |
The seismic method involves measurement of the travel time of seismic waves refracted at the interfaces between subsurface layers of different velocity. The seismic wave is generated at ground level using different techniques, but the most common and effective for shallow applications is the hammer and plate technique. |
| Once generated, the seismic wave travels eitherdirectly through the upper layer (direct arrivals) or traveling down to and then laterally along layers of different velocity before returning to the surface ( refracted arrivals). The energy is recorded on surface using an array of geophones spaced at regular intervals. The refracted wave is recorded as a first arrival signal at a certain distance from the “shot” point. Observing and comparing the travel times of the refracted and direct signals offers information about the depth and layout of the target of investigation. |
